Matched fields
Use the Cable Marking Decoder to match a complete visible marking against the imported cable database and the smaller exact lookup set. The tool returns a decoded summary, confidence note, segment breakdown, and reference rows for a matched entry.
Imported database

How to read a matched marking
- Enter the complete visible marking, keeping spaces, hyphens, suffixes, conductor notation, and units.
- Read the decoded summary first, then inspect the segment breakdown and reference rows.
- Compare the result with the original product label and manufacturer data sheet before relying on it.
- If the marking is outside the imported database and exact lookup rows, keep it unresolved rather than treating a partial match as a complete specification.
Segment structure in the imported database
| Visible part | Examples in this set | What the current data returns |
|---|---|---|
| Family or prefix | H07, H05, NYY, NM-B, THHN, SOOW, UF-B, SJOOW | Recognized cable family or product category. |
| Construction or insulation segment | RN-F, VV-F, V-U, V-K, J, OO, W | The meaning recorded for that matched entry. |
| Conductor notation | 3G2.5, 1X2.5, 5X10, 3C, 4C | Core count and earth or conductor notation where the entry defines it. |
| Size segment | 1.5, 2.5, 4, 10, 12 AWG, 14 AWG, 16 AWG | Area or gauge as printed in the matched reference row. |
Worked examples
H07RN-F 3G2.5 is returned as a flexible rubber cable with three conductors including protective earth and 2.5 mm2 each. H07V-U 1X2.5 is returned as a single-core PVC insulated solid conductor, while H07V-K 1X4 is returned as a single-core PVC insulated flexible conductor. In the US-style entries, NM-B 12/2 and UF-B 14/2 expose the family, gauge, and two-insulated-conductor notation recorded by the exact lookup rows.
What the decoder does not decide
- This module is a production database lookup, not a universal cable-marking parser.
- A conductor area or gauge is not an ampacity result.
- A visible match does not complete the manufacturer specification or settle local requirements.
- An unresolved marking should be checked against the complete label and product documentation.
Sources and limits
Imported regional power-cord rows from MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs, harmonized cable marking guides, UL wire and cable marking guidance, and manufacturer cable data sheets; verified 2026-08-30.
Limits: This page describes the imported cable database and exact lookup examples. It does not parse every cable marking, determine ampacity, or replace the complete product label, manufacturer data sheet, applicable local requirements, or professional review.

Decode logic
- Normalize the visible marking by trimming whitespace and matching it against the imported cable database and exact lookup rows.
- Split a matched marking into the recognized family, construction or insulation segment, conductor notation, and size segment when those fields are present.
- Return the decoded summary, segment breakdown, and reference rows from the matched entry.
- A reference match is not a complete cable specification; verify the product label, manufacturer data sheet, and applicable local requirements.
FAQs
What cable markings does this decoder support?
The exact lookup rows include H07RN-F 3G2.5, H05VV-F 3G1.5, H07V-U 1X2.5, H07V-K 1X4, NYY-J 5X10, NM-B 12/2, THHN 12 AWG, SOOW 3C 12 AWG, UF-B 14/2, and SJOOW 4C 16 AWG. The imported database adds 130 regional power-cord rows from the MicrosoftDocs corpus.
Can a cable marking determine ampacity?
No. The marking can identify information such as a conductor area or gauge in the supported examples, but ampacity is not determined by the marking alone.
Why can the same type of marking need more context?
Markings can be reused by different manufacturers, regions, product families, or standard systems. Compare the complete product label and manufacturer data sheet before relying on a result.
What should I do when my marking is not recognized?
Enter the complete visible marking, including spaces, hyphens, suffixes, and units. If it is still outside the imported database and exact lookup rows, keep the result unresolved and verify the cable against its product documentation.
