Conductor notation often carries more information than the family name alone. The imported cable database includes G, J, X, slash notation, and C notation, but their meaning depends on the complete marking. Use the Cable Marking Decoder with the whole string.
Notation in the current examples
| Visible notation | Current example | Recorded meaning |
|---|---|---|
| G | H07RN-F 3G2.5 | Three cores including green-yellow earth; the lookup notes that G indicates a protective conductor. |
| G | H05VV-F 3G1.5 | Three cores including earth, 1.5 mm2. |
| X | H07V-U 1X2.5 | Single 2.5 mm2 conductor in the matched entry. |
| X | NYY-J 5X10 | Five cores, 10 mm2 each; J is recorded separately as including a protective conductor. |
| Slash notation | NM-B 12/2 | 12 AWG and two insulated conductors in the current US-style lookup. |
| C | SOOW 3C 12 AWG | Three conductors. |
| C | SJOOW 4C 16 AWG | Four conductors. |
Do not merge symbols across families
The letter J does not have one universal meaning in every row. In NYY-J 5X10, the current data records J as including a protective conductor. In SJOOW 4C 16 AWG, the current data records J as part of the junior service voltage class. Read the entire matched entry rather than moving one letter between product families.
Conductor count is not a complete cable specification
A count such as 3G2.5, 5X10, 3C, or 4C tells you what the current reference row records for that marking. It does not by itself determine ampacity, installation permission, procurement suitability, or local compliance.
Practical reading order
- Preserve the family and suffix.
- Identify whether the row uses G, X, slash, or C notation.
- Read the count and size together.
- Check the note attached to the exact reference row.
Source and limits
Imported regional power-cord rows from MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs, harmonized cable marking guides, UL wire and cable marking guidance, and manufacturer cable data sheets; verified 2026-08-30.
- This page is a production database view built from imported rows plus exact cable-marking lookup examples.
- A conductor area or gauge shown in a marking does not determine ampacity by itself.
- Manufacturer-specific suffixes and local code requirements can change the final meaning. Verify the complete product label and data sheet before acting.
- Do not treat this decoder or guide as a safety, installation, procurement, customs, or legal compliance decision.
