Use the decoder above to read an enclosure IP rating digit by digit. Enter the code exactly as printed: IP followed by two characters, where X means not rated for that position. The tool explains solids protection, liquids protection, and the 69K high-pressure variant separately.

Reference Table

InputDecoded result
IP65Dust-tight (6), protected against water jets (5)
IP67Dust-tight (6), protected against temporary immersion (7)
IPX4Solids not rated (X), protected against splashing water (4)
IP2XFinger-safe solids (2), liquids not rated (X)
IP69KDust-tight with high-pressure, high-temperature washdown protection

Code Structure

PositionMeaning
First digit (0-6, X)Protection against solids and access; 6 is dust-tight.
Second digit (0-9, X)Protection against liquids; higher is generally stronger.
X placeholderThat position was not rated — never read X as zero protection.
69K suffixExtra high-pressure washdown rating beyond the digit scale.

How To Decode

  1. Enter the rating exactly as printed, keeping both characters and any K suffix.
  2. Read the first digit for solids and the second for liquids — the two scales are independent.
  3. Confirm test conditions, temperature, and enclosure data sheet before relying on the rating.

Sources And Limits

IEC 60529 IP Code structure and common enclosure rating guides; verified 2026-08-26. A rating describes tested conditions only — installation, aging, seals, and cable entries can change real protection.

Decode logic

  • Strip the IP prefix, then read the first digit as solid-particle protection and the second digit as liquid-ingress protection from the IEC 60529 code tables.
  • Read X as not tested for that position: IPX4 leaves solids unrated, IP2X leaves liquids unrated. X never means zero.
  • Read extended ratings such as IP69K as dust-tight plus high-pressure, high-temperature water-jet protection, not as a higher number on a single scale.
  • Use the decoded rating as a marking interpretation only and verify enclosure performance against the test report and manufacturer data sheet.

FAQs

What does the X in IPX4 mean?

X means solid-particle protection was not tested for that position. IPX4 rates splashing-water protection only; check the enclosure data sheet for any dust claim.

What does IP2X leave unrated?

IP2X rates finger-safe solids protection (objects larger than 12.5 mm) and leaves liquid protection unrated. It is not the same as IP20 for water.

Can an IP65 enclosure be submerged?

No. IP65 covers dust-tightness and water jets, not immersion. Look for IP67 or IP68 with stated depth and duration, then confirm the test report.

Is IP69K higher than IP67?

They cover different exposures: IP69K targets high-pressure, high-temperature jets while IP67 targets temporary immersion. Compare the test conditions, not the digits.
